WOD with GOD

In order to get stronger we have to sometimes push ourselves beyond our comfort zone.  In order to produce muscle growth, you have to apply a load of stress greater than what your body or muscles had previously adapted too.  When you progress into increasing your weight load you will see your numbers go up.  After you workout, your body repairs or replaces damaged muscle fibers.  Interesting that in order to get stronger muscles that have to break down first.  The same process is true in our growth as a Christian.

Yesterday I heard a sermon about sanctification.  What is sanctification?  As beleivers who have accepted Christ, we are set apart from the world.  We are to demonstrate to the unbeleiving world who Christ is.  It is a process from the moment we become God’s child.  We all have an aquired environment that we grew up in.  Aquired meaning our thoughts and attitudes are results from what we were exposed to as a child.  Some positive, some not.  Regardless of what are past was like, we all having something hindering our growth and freedom in the Lord.  We all have damaged emotions that link to something or someone.  Is it fear, unforgiveness, rejection, greed, bitterness, or all of the above?  We have to confess these things in order to overcome them.  Choose to be healed from them.  Brokeness precedes wholeness.  Just like our muscles.  We have to broken down to become stronger.  Sanctified is the breaking process of the beleiver to be conformed into the likeness of His son.  It is a journey and just like how it took you a long time to hit your PR.  It also takes time to for the healing and restoration to take place.  Be willing to forgive others, Be honest, stop blaming other people, and don’t be too proud to ask for help.

but test them all; hold on to what is good, reject every kind of evil.
May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.  1 Thessalonians 5:21-23

In this passage out of 2 Corinthians 5:17-19, it talks about reconciliation  through Christ.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation:that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.

We just celebrated Christmas.  I passed a sign in someone’s yard that read, KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS.  It made me reflect on my own actions and attitude toward the holiday and how we get so wrapped up in the gift giving then focusing on what happened on Christmas.  That God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ.  He loved us so much that he sent his son to earth.  Because of sin and what Adam and Eve did when they disobeyed the Lord, he had a plan of salvation.  God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. It is a gift that was paid with the blood of Jesus Christ.

At the stroke of midnight we will flip into 2014.  There is nothing we can do to change 2013.  Focus on your future and I love how this passage reads,if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old has gone and the new is here! Only through Christ are we truly reconciled.

For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sinRomans 6:6

Tomorrow will be the last day in 2013.  As you look back over the year do you think about what you would do differently?  Sometimes entering a New Year is an exciting feeling of a clean slate.  We set new goals or sometimes they tend to be the same from year to year.  Optimistically hoping to change the things that hinder you from being at your best potential.  A New Years resolution on a personal note  is to strive to put God first each and every day.   We tend to let work, family, financial strains and schedules take precedence and if there is anything left over we give God a few minutes of thanks.  When we focus on what are we doing and how is it benefiting our relationship with the Lord?  Are we being the person He designed us to be?  Instead of focusing on the little things, focus on Him.  The creator of heaven and earth.  Your creator who knew you before you were born.

This devotional is posted to our website to share the word of God to those who choose to read it.  Most important time spent during the day is reading the Bible and praying.  Not for selfish desires of wanting things answered on our behalf but to actively seek a relationship and grow in His word.  Knowing how to be discerning in the choices we make and how our choices affect those around us.  The battle is raging all around us.  Satan is attacking our homes, families and our churches.  How we withstand the fire in 2014?  Will we face it with the shield of faith and the sword of the spirit? Arm yourself everyday. If God is for us, who can be against us? Romans 8:31

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Matthew 6:33

Are you a person who doesn’t give up easily, or are you quick to bail out when the going gets tough?  We joke around in the gym about indomitable will, or picking the bar up even when you don’t want to.  These are all signs of the desire to persevere.  If you have developed the habit of giving up at the first sign of trouble, it is probably time for you to have a heart to heart talk with the person you see in the mirror every day.  A well lived life is like a marathon, not a sprint.  It calls for preparation, determination, and lots of perseverance.  As an example of perseverance, you need look no further than our Savior, Jesus Christ.  Jesus finished what He began.  Despite his suffering and despite the shame of the cross, Jesus was steadfast in his faithfulness to God.  You too should remain faithful, especially when times get tough.  Are you facing  a difficult situation or some kind of adversity in your life?  If so, remember that whatever your problem, God can handle it.  Your job is to keep persevering until He does.

Therefore, my dear brother, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the Lord’s work, knowing that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.~1 Corinthians 15:58

When you think about what you are thankful for, what comes to mind?  Thanksgiving is a legal holiday for people to be thankful for what they have.  People often associate this holiday with turkey, pumpkin pie, Black Friday, etc…  Often we forget to focus on things that mean the most to us.

Thanksgiving is defined as, the act of giving thanks, prayer expressing gratitude or a public acknowledgment or celebration of divine goodness.  Do we give thanks everyday or just one time a year.  Do we start off our day despite our circumstances finding something to be thankful for?  More than likely the things we are most grateful for we take advantage of and often shift to the back burner.  Our world has got us in  a rat race just trying to keep up.

Time seems to fly and we feel like we are surviving day in and day out.  Who’s fault is this?  We have slowly fell into this year after year and the breakdown of the home becomes more and more.  With the advancement of technology, families spend less time together.  Teenagers are glued to their cell phones and parents are more than likely glued to their I pads or computers.  While technology has been a great advancement to many things in our life it has also been a tool to drive distance in the communication in families.  Families were stronger when they had less distractions.  When was the last time you sat down and just talked to each other?  When was the last time you drove by someone’s front porch and saw a family outside visiting?   All of the simple things of life that we take for granted have become obsolete. Families have forgotten how to communicate.

Thanksgiving means something different to all of us.  Make it an appoint in your life today and everyday to find something to be thankful for.  Don’t allow the things that don’t matter to trump the things that do.  We are all guilty of this and it is a slow fade into separating our homes, family and friends.

So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.
Colossians 2:6-7

Each day, we should spend time alone with God.  But the demands of everyday living often rob us of those precious moments with our Creator.  The cycle is so predictable and eventually conspires to happen to all of us.  We become so busy with the inevitable distractions of daily life that we fail to carve out quiet moments with the one who created us.  And when we fall into this, we suffer because of our misuse of time.  We live in a world filled to the brim with distractions, temptations, frustrations, and mandatory obligations.  However, our need for God is much greater.  We must often consult with him, and we must make time to consult with him in solitude, so we can hear him and not the constant distractions of our busy lives.  No time during the day is more valuable than the quiet time we spend devoting to communicating with God.

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.~2 Corithians 4:16

Do you ever feel weak and weary?  I speak from example of myself that I tend to take on more than I can chew.  We all have the willingness to work.  We work hard at our jobs, at life, inside of the gym but do we ever take time to recharge our own batteries with rest.  We sometimes need to step away from all the clutter in our lives and focus on why we work so hard to begin with.  What are we working for anyway?  God wants us to take a break and get some rest.  He set aside a full day of rest after creation as an example for us to follow.  Jesus understood the needs and limitations of his disciples and took them away for a break.  Work is good, but it must be balanced by regular attention to the health of your body, mind, soul, and spirit.  Whole life comes from holy rest.  Take time to seek rest from God.  Spend time in the word free of distractions.  Take the time to remember who and why we are working so hard for.

It is useless for you to work so hared from early morning until late at night, anxiously working for food to eat; for God gives rest to his loved ones.~Psalm 127:2

The creation of the heavens and the earth and everything in them was completed.  On the seventh day, having finished his task, God rested from all his work.  And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when he rested from his work of creation.~Genesis 2:1-3

I use to love about ten minutes of the news in the morning.  Just give me an idea of what is going around the world.  This morning I listened to the government shutdown.  Are they going to raise the debt ceiling?  Are people going to get their social security checks?  It doesn’t sound good and you wonder how long will this go on?  It just made me realize that we serve a God with no boundaries.  There is no ceiling that has to be raised for him to perform mighty works that only he can.  His power will never run out or shutdown.  Our hope has to come from him or else we will feel like the Free Fall at Six Flags.  Wondering if we going to puke or pass out from the whip lash of emotions that take over when allow our self to worry about all these things we have no control over.  Place your trust in him and you will never be disappointed.  God is awesome – he is omniscient (all knowing).

For he looks to the ends of the earth
and sees everything under the heavens.
Job 28:24

Under today’s post there is a link about what matters most to Pat Sherwood.  Basically what his point is, we all have too much stuff.  If we are stock piling our junk somewhere for some reason that we think we might use it down the road.  Guess what?  You won’t.  I like to take the article further and ask, “What matters most to you?”  The truth is everything on this earth will pass away, including you and me.  We will leave the earth the way we entered.  We cannot take anything with us.  This should be motivation to drive us to be more of an impact on people’s life.  Not to focus on our earthly gains but our eternal gains.

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.
Matthew 6:19

One of my favorite movies is Forest Gump.  His famous words are, “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get”.  Can we all say Amen to that.  Just when everything is calm you get blind sided.  Maybe your life feels like it is a mad rush all the time and you wonder how it feels just to stop and slow down.  God gave us an owner manual to refer to everyday and it is his word.  It will guide and direct us and when the unexpected happens, it will give us peace and understanding.  You never what lays ahead in life but be sure you have a way to get through it.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.Proverbs 3:5-6
