Encouragement is such a great gift we can give someone.  We have a hard time finding things to be positive about sometimes.  If you feel the urge to compliment someone, do it.  Especially when we are in the gym and we feel like we are struggling.  Sometimes hearing, “you can do it”  makes you go harder. We all have strengths and weaknesses.  It is so awesome to have someone cheer you on when you feel like giving up.  We strive to be better and we want to others be better.

“As iron sharpens iron, a friend sharpens a friend.”
 Proverbs 27:17

Have you ever  sat through a class and when it was over you can’t remember one thing the teacher said.  You probably were not paying attention because you had other important things on your mind.  The same distractions can keep us from obtaining the Word of God.  Believers can live in defeat because we never apply the Word to our life.  Hearing is not enough.  We have to apply it to our life and then we will reap the benefits.

“so is my word that goes out from my mouth:
It will not return to me empty,
but will accomplish what I desire and acheive
the purpose for which I sent it.”

Isaiah 55:11

Take time to start your day off in the word and asking God for direction.  If you don’t, you open the door for confusion and lack of judgement.  Life just keeps getting more busy and technology has allowed us to micromanage our time so well that the one thing that doesn’t need micromanaged is our quiet time reading the Bible and praying.  It will be a light unto your path for the day and won’t regret the time you spend doing it.

Here is a quote from C.S. Lewis~
The moment you wake up each morning, all your wishes and hopes for the day rush
at you like wild animals.  And the first job each morning consists in shoving it all back;
in listening to that other voice, taking that other point of view, letting that other
larger, stronger, quieter life coming flowing in.

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth
   Psalm 46:10

Do you beleive God cares about you? The bible says he does. God’s word is truth. If we are not reading his Word and taking the truth that it gives us we will allow anxiety and depression to take over.  It seems like it gets harder to overcome the battlefield in our minds when we look around us and see how bad things are sometimes.  The NIV version says to cast your anxiety upon him and in the next verse it says, Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Satan is looking for a loop hole, don’t give him one.

“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” 1 Peter 5:7

Do you ever feel bogged down by emotions that are due to overwhelming circumstance? Sometimes you feel like you are going to have an anxiety attack and see no light at the end of the tunnel. What is our best response to this? Your thoughts can cause you great harm emotionally and physically. Your best defense is to focus on God and honor him by your actions. Have faith and believe in Him. Turn your eyes upon Jesus! Here are the lyrics to the chorus of that wonderful hymn. Sing this when you are down and God will lift your burden. Think about this fact. When we are in heaven there will be no sun or moon, God will be our shining light! ” The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp.” Revelation 21:23

Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace.

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.” John 14:1-3

In the Garden of Gethesemane is where Jesus and his disciples would go and pray. In Matthew 26:41 Jesus asked three of his disciples to watch over him so he could pray. What did they do? They fell asleep. Are spending the time with Jesus or falling asleep? We let life take over and put Jesus on the back burner then wonder why our life is a mess. Are we praying or sleeping? The average Christian spend five minutes praying and we wonder why we have stress and anxiety.

Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.” And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
Matthew 26:38-41

Do you spend your day worrying about tomorrow? We focus so much what is down the road instead of what faces us now. We fail to live each day to its fullest. We are to live in the now and take each day as a gift because we never know what tomorrow will bring. Satan uses worry to deter us from being thankful and forget our blessings. Don’t allow this way of thinking to keep you living in the abundance that God has planned for us.

Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” James 4:13-15

February is here!  Finally after a long month of January we begin a new month.  Tomorrow is ground hog day.  ” According to folklore, if it is cloudy when a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day, then spring will come early; if it is sunny, the groundhog will supposedly see its shadow and retreat back into its burrow, and the winter weather will continue for six more weeks.”wikipedia

After all the snow and ice and the cancellation of school for a week some parents would pay the furry little creature if he would predict an early spring.  Its funny how we don’t how to react when we are shut down.  Who would have ever guessed Atlanta could ever be shut down?  When we have control ripped out of our fingertips we freak out.  But isn’t it false reassurance to ever think we had control to begin with?  The only one that has control over the forces of nature is the creator.  It humbles us back into our place of trusting the Lord.  You look at pictures of the all the cars stranded on the interstate.  Left abandoned because there was no place to go, a thought crossed my mind.  If we are alive to see to when Christ comes back for those who have called on his name and accepted him in their life, this picture would be very similar.  Many people on Facebook were describing it as looking like the a scene from the “Walking Dead”.  I think it will be very similar as described in Matthew a scene that many of us have wondered what will it be like when the Lord descends from heaven and everyone will know it is Christ.  It will be a global vision that no one can deny.  Those left behind will be in anguish and wonder where all the people have gone.  Just like the images of cars abandoned, people will be gone.

“Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory.  And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.”  Matthew 24:30-31

No one can predict how your day is going to unfold.  We wake up every morning and wonder what will today be like.  Today could literally be your last day on earth.  Today you could get a job promotion.  Today could be the same as everyday.  We never know what to expect. If you have ever watched the CrossFit games, the atheletes don’t know what the WODs are until they get there.  I like how CrossFit doesn’t specialize.  It makes you a more well rounded athelete and prepares you for the unexpected.

How do you prepare for the unexpected in life?  No one day what the day will bring when it starts out.  That is why God tells us to prepare our hearts and minds.  Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.  Romans 12:2

This renewal doesn’t just take place once in a blue moon.  It is an every day occurence of actively seeking God’s direction and trusting him in our life.  I love this term that describes God’s nature, Omniscience.  Which means actually knowing everything that can be known.  He knows our very thoughts, our feelings, our desires and our needs.  Prepare for the unexpected by trusting in the only one who knows what to expect.  To God belong wisdom and power; counsel and understanding are his.  Job 12:13

For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.
1 Corinthians 1:25

In order to get stronger we have to sometimes push ourselves beyond our comfort zone.  In order to produce muscle growth, you have to apply a load of stress greater than what your body or muscles had previously adapted too.  When you progress into increasing your weight load you will see your numbers go up.  After you workout, your body repairs or replaces damaged muscle fibers.  Interesting that in order to get stronger muscles that have to break down first.  The same process is true in our growth as a Christian.

Yesterday I heard a sermon about sanctification.  What is sanctification?  As beleivers who have accepted Christ, we are set apart from the world.  We are to demonstrate to the unbeleiving world who Christ is.  It is a process from the moment we become God’s child.  We all have an aquired environment that we grew up in.  Aquired meaning our thoughts and attitudes are results from what we were exposed to as a child.  Some positive, some not.  Regardless of what are past was like, we all having something hindering our growth and freedom in the Lord.  We all have damaged emotions that link to something or someone.  Is it fear, unforgiveness, rejection, greed, bitterness, or all of the above?  We have to confess these things in order to overcome them.  Choose to be healed from them.  Brokeness precedes wholeness.  Just like our muscles.  We have to broken down to become stronger.  Sanctified is the breaking process of the beleiver to be conformed into the likeness of His son.  It is a journey and just like how it took you a long time to hit your PR.  It also takes time to for the healing and restoration to take place.  Be willing to forgive others, Be honest, stop blaming other people, and don’t be too proud to ask for help.

but test them all; hold on to what is good, reject every kind of evil.
May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.  1 Thessalonians 5:21-23
